Our definition of Nordic ski touring

nordic ski tourOur Nordic ski touring section focuses on tours away from groomed tracks and trails, using Nordic free-heel skis (rather than Alpine, Randonnée, x-country or Telemark style touring skis and boots).

This style of touring uses a range of Nordic ski equipment, from traditional Nordic touring skis, which are similar to track x-country skis with little or no side cut; to backcountry Nordic skis which are wider and may have some shaping. Nordic touring skis will be 'double-cambered' to allow for a wax pocket (or a patterned 'fish scale' grip section) for climbing the generally rolling terrain encountered on these types of tours. The more robust touring skis may have metal edges.

If you're new to Nordic touring you might want to try things out before you go, take a look at our suggestions here.
